His Other Voice

Didymos Thomas listened to Jesus teaching to individuals, small groups, and large audiences. The same core message was altered to resonate with the listeners; hence the use of Father, the One, the All. Within the Gospel of Thomas the majority of the logia are aspects Jesus's teaching faithfully recorded by Thomas; Thomas is the messenger.

There are however a few logia where Jesus words are actually quoted. These words must have been considered very very important to Thomas, and to those who would read this Gospel.

The most powerful by far is logion 77:

#77   I am the Light above them all. I am the All. The All comes forth from me, and the All reaches towards me. Cleave the wood and I am there; raise the stone, and you shall find me there

This is an astonishing statement by Jesus, one which was considered blasphemy by Jewish leaders and led to his trial. Why should Jesus make such a statement? Could it be that it was not Jesus as Teacher, but another Voice reaching out to us?

In this logion Jesus announces his unity with the Divine and through that relationship we can hear the Voice. The Voice declares that it is everywhere in life; both our inner and outer worlds.

When Jesus is quoted directly then the possibility that it is another Voice is reinforced in logion 13. This is usually referred to as the Thomas's 'signature' when the disciple recorded a personal conversation with Jesus. There is an obvious master/disciple relationship at the heart of the initial response by Thomas: “Master, my mouth will actually not accept saying whom you resemble”.

And then there’s Jesus reply:

#13    I am not your master; because you have drunk, you have become drunk from the bubbling spring which I have made to gush out.

Is this the Voice making it clear that it is not simply Jesus speaking to Thomas? That it is the other's Divine Self who has opened the awareness of Thomas to such an extent?

When we read logion 28 it once again becomes apparent that another Voice is speaking.

#28    I stood boldly in the midst of the world and I manifested to them in the flesh. I have found them all drunk; I found none among them athirst, and my soul was afflicted for the sons of men because they are blind in their heart and they do not see that empty they came into the world and that empty they seek to go out of the world again, except that they are now drunk. When they shake off their wine, then they will transform their Knowing.

Here is the Voice of sorrow at the lack of awareness amongst us; we are all so enamoured by the delights of the world that we are blind to the wonders that lie within. Not only is mankind blind but there is little desire to remedy the situation. It is like we are asleep and must awaken (shake off the wine) to the promise.

The Voice describes the promise in logion 17

#17    I will give you what no eye has seen, and what no ear has heard, and what no hand has touched, and what has not arisen in the heart of man.

We will enter a new world beyond the physical senses; the world of the spirit. And when this happens we will join with the Voice and see the world in all its Galilean Glories with our new eyes.

#108    He who drinks from my mouth shall become as me; and I myself will become him, and the hidden things shall be manifested.

Not only will our perceptions both of our outer and inner worlds be change—Knowing rather than believing—we will merge with the Divine, the All, the One, the Father.

The Voice declares that when we change our Knowing, we will be unable to return to our previous perceptions of the world; we will be changed forever.

#71    I will overturn this house, and no one will be able to build it up again.

However, before we can “drink from His mouth” we may face many difficulties and setbacks. In logion 16 the Voice warns of the strife that we face in the physical world with family and personal relationships; being out-of-step with the thoughts, moods, and values of today.

#16    I have come to cast separations upon the earth, fire, sword, war. For there will be five in a house, three against two, and two against three, the father against the son, and the son against the father, and they shall stand boldly, being 'loners'.

We also face similar challenges, turmoil, and confusion in our inner world in dealing with previous concepts, beliefs, and behaviour.

Help is at hand however, as latent within us is the means to overcome these difficulties.

#10    I have cast fire upon the world, and behold, I guard it until it is ablaze.

The Voice tells us that Fire smoulders within us and when ready it will consume and destroy our false perceptions of what we think is real.

When will the Fire be lit? We may think that we are the initiators --- in control --- of this but the Voice makes it abundantly clear that we are the responders.

#23    I will choose you, one out of a thousand, and two out of tenthousand, and they shall stand up being a single one.

So stay awake to the love and truth in your heart and respond to the promptings of the Voice.
