Each of these Essays explores a different theme in the Gospel of Thomas. The aim of the book is to present the inner meanings of some of the more important sayings as they gradually revealed themselves to the author, and to record the results of his researches into the provenance and background of that Gospel. That research was chiefly done amongst original source books in the great Bodleian Library of Oxford, and the British and Indian Libraries in London. Of course it included derivative contemporary literature on the Gospel.

The unfolding of the inner meanings of individual sayings was greatly aided by the work of the Association Metanoia, especially that of Emile Gillabert.

All that is presented in the form of Essays, each on one particular topic. They were written over a period of about three years, as the understandings or insights came to the author. In the book however, while each Essay is independent, they are arranged in a specific sequence. Those at the start deal with matter-of-fact topics, with the emphasis gradually developing toward spiritual themes. All the Essays prompt the reader to do some thinking.

Each of the Essays started from spotting some clue, either in the Gospel of Thomas itself or in the religious and spiritual life of the author. They invite the reader to join in a kind of voyage of discovery. The Essays are intended for anyone seeking spiritual Truth and interested in the contribution the Gospel might make. They could open a window on our awareness of Jesus that may come as a surprise.
